There are many choices of beverage products that can refresh
your body after being tired of exercising.
Call it water, energy drinks, sports drinks, milk or other
products, you can choose whichever you like. In fact, not a few people who
prefer to drink soda.
Drinking soda is not only harmful to the health in the long
run. A study published in the Physiology journal found that drinking soda after
exercise can increase the risk of acute kidney injury.
This is related to the changes in the blood flow to the kidneys when you exercise.
The danger of drinking soda after exercise for the kidneys
Blood flow to the kidneys decreases when you exercise in a
hot environment. This is a normal mechanism in the body that aims to regulate
the blood pressure and fluid from the body. However, a drastic decrease in the
blood flow can also reduce the supply of the oxygen that needed by kidney
tissue resulting in the damage to these organs.
A research which involving 12 people show that drinking soda
after an exercise has the potential to cause harm to the kidneys. The
participants who consumed soda after exercise showed signs of mild dehydration
and an increase in the vasopressin hormone which can increase the blood pressure.
The urine test results also show an increase in creatinine
in the blood and a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (LFG). LFG is the
average rate of blood filtration in the glomerulus found in the kidneys. An
increase in creatinine and a decrease in LFG are the signs of acute kidney
injury, and this condition will get worse if you are also dehydrated.
The impact of drinking soda on general health
On the average, one can of soft drinks contains about 10
teaspoons of added sugar. Previously, WHO had provided recommendations
regarding maximum sugar intake, i.e. not exceeding 6 teaspoons a day. That is,
drinking a can of soda after exercise will give your body sugar intake excess
with the maximum recommended.
Besides the high sugar, soft drinks also contain lots of
caffeine and refined salt. This drink is also acidic so that it can accelerate the
putrefaction in the cavities. Soft drinks can actually be consumed in small
amounts, but their consumption in the long term can increase the risk of health
problems such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
Avoid the danger of drinking soda after exercise
Soft drinks have very little nutrition and will not help you
improve your performance during the exercise. Conversely, soda actually
provides excess sugar intake which can cause the weight gain. This drink also
cannot eliminate thirst after exercising so that it cannot be equated with
water or sports drinks.
To restore the lost of fluids after exercise, you can
consume a choice of healthier drinks or at least donate nutrients rather than
drinking soda. You can try pure fruit juices, smoothies, sports drinks,
chocolate milk, protein powder drinks or water.
Fruits contain the natural sugars which provide energy for
exercise, and smoothies consist of various ingredients which rich in fiber and
vitamins that are important for the body performance. Meanwhile, milk and
drinks from protein powder are the best sources of protein that can increase the
muscle mass. Don’t forget; take care of your kidney health by fulfilling the
need of water.
Eating the right drink after exercise will not only protect
you from dehydration. Your kidneys will also avoid the danger of damage caused
by drinking soda. Come on; limit the consumption of soda from now on.
