What Enzyme Digests Protein

What Enzyme Digests Protein – Protein digestion begins when you first start chewing. There are two enzymes in your saliva called amylase and lipase. They mostly break down carbohydrates and fats. Once a protein source reaches your stomach, hydrochloric acid and enzymes called proteases break it down into smaller chains of amino acids. Amino acids are joined together by peptides, which are broken by proteases.

What Enzyme Digests Protein – In the human digestive system, the main sites of digestion are the oral cavity, the stomach, and the small intestine. Digestive enzymes are secreted by different exocrine glands. Digestive enzymes enable food to be broken down into nutrients in our bodies to produce energy, and repair and maintain our physical structure and function.

Enzymes are very specific. Each has a particular job it does and it does only that job. So you want to get the right type of enzymes for the right type of food or job you want the enzyme to work on. Enzymes must have the right shape and chemistry to function.

From your stomach, these smaller chains of amino acids move into your small intestine. As this happens, your pancreas releases enzymes and a bicarbonate buffer that reduces the acidity of digested food. This reduction allows more enzymes to work on further breaking down amino acid chains into individual amino acids. Some common enzymes involved in this phase include:

  • trypsin
  • chymotrypsin
  • carboxypeptidase
